Here are some basic rules to follow whether on the mats or streets, to which there are very few exceptions:

1. When on top, stay on top. Whether you’re in guard, mount, or stuck in a submission, you are better off if you do your best to stay on top.

2. When in open guard, do not let it close. Step one of passing the guard is to open it. If you are in open guard and go back to closed you’ve gone from step 2 back to step 1.

3. When in closed guard, keep your hands on the opponent. If you allow your hands to go to the ground, you are unable to keep their back flat, and you are in immediate danger of attacks like the bump sweep, kimura and triangle choke.
