For the fortunate children confidence comes naturally, or it comes from early and easy success in an endeavor. But others struggle with self-esteem, and that lack of confidence can be compounded when they face a difficult set-back.

One of the most powerful forms of confidence comes not from success, but from the ability to rebound after “failure.” This is a skill that often needs to be taught, and at Paramount Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu we work tremendously hard to teach children how to bounce back from defeat.

BJJ is a great martial art for teaching many things, including self-defense, discipline, work ethic, etc. But it is just as powerful a tool for teaching kids that instead of seeing something as a failure, they should see it as the starting point for achieving something great.

“But my child doesn’t need confidence, he is already confident.”

To this parent I ask, is there a limit to confidence? Of course not. Any person could be more confident, any person could achieve greater results if given the tools and opportunity. At Paramount BJJ we are 100% committed to being a part of you and your child’s success.

Unless you have some experience doing Jiu-Jitsu, it may be a little hard to follow exactly what’s going on in this match. But that’s exactly what makes it so great- 12 year old kids competing at a high-level, performing advanced techniques that many adults could study and learn from!

Milind Sangani, of Paramount Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Downingtown, is wearing the green shorts. He earned Gold medals in both the gi (uniform) and no-gi (regular clothes) divisions. This is quite an achievement, and a testament to the program at Paramount. Check it out:

We teach kids of all levels, from age 4 and up, how to defend themselves in a real-life fight/self-defense scenario. Then we expand on that knowledge and delve into the world of advanced Jiu-Jitsu techniques, so that the kids can train or compete at a high-level.

Here are some basic rules to follow whether on the mats or streets, to which there are very few exceptions:

1. When on top, stay on top. Whether you’re in guard, mount, or stuck in a submission, you are better off if you do your best to stay on top.

2. When in open guard, do not let it close. Step one of passing the guard is to open it. If you are in open guard and go back to closed you’ve gone from step 2 back to step 1.

3. When in closed guard, keep your hands on the opponent. If you allow your hands to go to the ground, you are unable to keep their back flat, and you are in immediate danger of attacks like the bump sweep, kimura and triangle choke.

When it comes to the mental and emotional development of a child, building confidence is of the utmost importance and can often be quite a challenge. Developing the ability to overcome adversity is equally challenging and just as critical to the child’s success later in life.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a tough martial art. There are times in every students’ training that he or she is simply unable to do anything against their training partner or opponent. It is an individual sport so there is no one else to place blame on. Instead, the student is forced to accept their shortcomings and work to improve them. It can be a tough process.

But through proper instruction and coaching, as well as support from the parents and fellow students, the child will bounce back from those days. Gradually, the triumphs start to overshadow the set-backs and the child starts to learn that challenges, and even short-term defeat, are a good thing.

At Paramount Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu we pride ourselves on developing confident, healthy, and successful students- both children and adults- both on and off the mats. If you’re looking for an activity that will keep your both physically and mentally stimulated, as well as develop their character and life skills, then look no further.
