When it comes to the mental and emotional development of a child, building confidence is of the utmost importance and can often be quite a challenge. Developing the ability to overcome adversity is equally challenging and just as critical to the child’s success later in life.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a tough martial art. There are times in every students’ training that he or she is simply unable to do anything against their training partner or opponent. It is an individual sport so there is no one else to place blame on. Instead, the student is forced to accept their shortcomings and work to improve them. It can be a tough process.

But through proper instruction and coaching, as well as support from the parents and fellow students, the child will bounce back from those days. Gradually, the triumphs start to overshadow the set-backs and the child starts to learn that challenges, and even short-term defeat, are a good thing.
